Edward John Gies
1891 - 1970
Edward was born on 6 Nov 1891 to Edward GIES and Mary KUHN and they resided at 46 Jerry Street in Cleveland, Ohio.
He was very
hard-working. His primary employment was with the Cleveland Railways
driving an electric streetcar with the
motorman. This was a
becoming Cleveland Transit System and then Regional Transit Authority.
He drove long hours and
remained in the company's employment until retirement. He
worked out of the transit company's garage
located at State and Pearl Rds. in
Cleveland, Ohio. Places
of his residence included 3912 Woburn Ave. Cleveland in 1918, and
1600 Auburn Ave in 1922, and at 3119 Saratoga Ave, Cleveland in 1936, 1937 and again in
1942. Grandpa Edward was an
orphan at St. Anthony Orphanage between 1903 and 1910. He lived there after his father Edward GIES passed away in 1902.
In speaking with Aunt
Dorothy his daughter, I was told the orphanage was St. Anthony on Detroit Rd in Cleveland,
finds this orpahnage was located on Detroit
Rd near the former St. John Hospital. He was probably there since his father died at a
young age and possibly his mother was not
financially able to take care of him and his brother
Anthony. He was reunited
brother and mother after she remarried.
His funeral was arranged
by Zabor Funeral Home at 5690 Pearl Rd. Parma
Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of
November 26,1970 at 930am and he is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery,
Ohio. He was grandfather to 12 and great-grandfather to 6
according to his obituary.
